Are You Romanticizing Your Job?

We tend to romanticize passion, but this romance can quickly blind us to the realities of toxic work situations.

If you find yourself in a toxic role, one that you sought out specifically because it aligns with your “dream job,” what should you do?

One option is to quit. If your job is compromising your physical or mental health, it’s probably time to move on. This doesn’t mean you need to throw away your passion — it just means it may not be a suitable career choice.

Another option is to look out for “red flags” during the interview process. Identify what you are and aren’t willing to put up with at work, then ask the hiring manager questions to make sure their work environment isn’t a toxic one.

Finally, you can choose to pursue your passion on the side. If you want to do what you love for work, you need to be able to monetize it (especially if you want to be your own boss).

Find a job that will support you while you figure out how to do that.
