Building Momentum With Little Steps

Imagine you’re not just walking, but rather hiking up a mountain. It’s not Everest or Kilimanjaro; it’s more of a domestic hill, the kind you’d find in Colorado. But it’s still imposing, especially if you’re a flatlander like me, who grew up where the land is so level, you can watch your dog run away for three days.

Now, this mountain, it’s not going to bow down to you. It’s not going to make itself any easier to conquer. It’s going to stand there, steep and formidable, waiting for you to decide whether you’re going to take on the challenge or turn back to the comfortable flatland.

Here’s the thing: you don’t climb that mountain in one stride, no matter how long your legs are. You can’t hire a chopper and bypass the effort. The only way to reach the top, to feel the wind whip your face and look out over the world, is to take it one step at a time. Each of these steps feels inconsequential on its own. You might look at your foot inching forward and think, “What’s the point? I’m still miles from the top.”

But little by little, these minuscule movements add up. An hour passes, and you look down. Suddenly, you’re higher than you were before. Another hour, and you’re higher still. Each tiny step is a victory, a small win in the grand scheme of your mountain.

This is how you need to approach your goals in life. They’re your mountains. Some are higher than others, some steeper, some fraught with more danger. But whether it’s starting a business, getting a degree, losing weight, or learning a new skill, you won’t get there with a single giant leap. You climb these mountains one small step at a time, consistently and persistently.

Each email you send, each page you read, each salad you choose over a burger, each minute you practice the piano — they’re all steps. Alone, they feel insignificant. Together, they form the staircase to your summit. The staircase to your success.

Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is anything worth having. So, strap on your boots, point yourself at your mountain, and start stepping. No matter how small the stride, they add up to your big wins. Don’t discount the little steps. They’re the ones that get you to the top.
