If you want to accelerate your career growth, you need to start investing strategically in the right people. And that means expanding your circle of influence beyond your core team and your company.

Here’s the deal: when people of power and influence know you, they can open doors for you, champion your work, and help you achieve your career goals.

But where should you be directing your energy? Allow me to break it down for you:

😀 First up, managing higher. You need to make it a priority to meet your skip-level manager. This is your chance to showcase your recent projects, learn about their priorities, and demonstrate your value to the organization. And who knows, if you build a good rapport, they might even throw a promotion or a pay raise your way.

😀 Next, manage diagonally. It’s not just your direct manager who holds the keys to your success. You need to build relationships with the peers of your boss, who sit “up and sideways” from you on the org chart. Remember, promotion and performance scores are often decided by a committee, so make sure you’re on their radar.

😁 And finally, don’t forget to manage outside. You never know when the Great Reshuffle might hit, so it’s essential to maintain connections with leaders outside your team, your company, and your industry. This will give you options and flexibility when it’s time to make your next move.
